week of january 5th

First thing, happy birthday to my wife [and myself]. She selflessly shares her birthday with me (although I’m 12 hours her senior). Love you.

a Singer of Songs

The name pretty much tells you everything. This singer/songwriter’s album entitled Old Happiness is brought to us from Barcelona, which is a plus in my book. You’ll hear some familiar influences in his style and voice, but look for a “minimalistic” approach to songwriting on this album. Banjos, dirty electric guitar, and a swinging tempo are all present.

This will inevitably feel like Explosions in the Sky at first listen, so be prepared to make that connection quickly. This instrumental group is doing familiar delayed guitar, epic heavy music as others have done. But for those who are a fan, you may like these guys. Each of their albums only has around 6 songs, so check out their releases from last November as well.

Agyle Street

This entire album isn’t all my style, but there is talent there, and many may enjoy what this solo artist is doing. A mix between Panic at the Disco-style piano parts, Owl City electronic beats and voicing, and even at times, some Maroon 5 guitar hits. Made by Shawn “the Shaze”, this is a one man show, and he did some great work for doing it on his own.

Silver Roy

The Flight, another album from Spain, has some interesting sounds to it.There are some times when his voice reminds you of the Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan, but with a male twist. I think with some extra help this could haveve been a better album, but what he’s done is worth applauding. I do appreciate the rawness of the record though. While it isn’t something I would listen to all that often, some of you may enjoy what he has made. The cover is a bit odd though. But in a world of Lady GaGa, I guess that is pretty normal.
